Tight End
The tight end is the hybrid player on the offense. On running plays he has to be big enough to block with the offensive line ad be athletic enough to go and catch passes. The growth of passing in the NFL has also spawned a new generation of super athletic receiving tight ends who are too fast for a linebacker to cover and big enough to make it hard for defensive backs to cover them. The New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, two of the most successful teams of the last decade have both relied heavily on the tight end as a receiver.
